Retinol is one of the most studied skincare ingredients, but starting too fast is the most common mistake. Here is how to begin the gentle way.
What is retinol?
Retinol is a form of vitamin A. It is used to improve the look of uneven texture, fine lines, dullness and breakouts. You will also see related ingredients:
- Retinal (retinaldehyde): a stronger, faster-acting form – better once your skin is used to retinol.
- Bakuchiol: a plant-based ingredient often used as a gentler alternative. It is not the same as retinol, but it is a good option for sensitive skin.
How to start
- Night only. Use retinol in your evening routine.
- Start 2–3 nights a week, then slowly increase if your skin is comfortable.
- Use a pea-sized amount for the whole face, on dry skin, after cleansing.
- Moisturise afterwards. If your skin is sensitive, apply moisturiser first and retinol on top (“buffering”).
- Sunscreen every morning – retinol makes this step even more important.
What to expect
In the first few weeks, some dryness, flaking or mild redness is common as your skin adjusts. If it becomes uncomfortable, use it less often. Visible changes usually take several weeks of regular use.
What not to combine (at first)
- Avoid using strong exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA) on the same night when you are starting.
- Do not use several retinoid products at once.
- Gentle ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, snail mucin and ceramides pair well with retinol.
Who should avoid it?
If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using retinol or retinal. If you are using prescription acne or skin treatments, check with your doctor first.
