Snail mucin sounds unusual, but it is one of the best-selling ingredients in Korean skincare – and for good reason. Here is what it is and how to use it.
What is snail mucin?
On ingredient lists you will see it as snail secretion filtrate. It is a lightweight, slightly gel-like ingredient that naturally contains hydrating components. Brands use it to help skin feel hydrated, soft and comfortable, and to support a healthy-looking skin barrier.
Who is it good for?
- Dehydrated skin – including oily skin that still feels tight.
- Skin that feels dry or uncomfortable after strong treatments like acids or retinol.
- Anyone who wants a simple, lightweight hydration step.
Most skin types tolerate snail mucin well, but as with any product, patch test first – and skip it if you know you react to it.
How to use it
- Cleanse, then apply toner.
- Apply a small amount of snail essence – like the COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence – and pat it into your skin.
- Follow with moisturiser. If you like a matching cream, try the COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All-in-One Cream.
- In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
You can use it morning and night. Want to try it first? The COSRX All About Snail Trial Kit is a good way to start.
Does it work with other ingredients?
Yes. Snail mucin layers well with almost everything – hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, retinol and PDRN. Many people use it to keep skin comfortable while using stronger actives.
Is it ethical?
COSRX states that its snail mucin is collected without harming the snails. If this matters to you, check each brand’s own information.
Quick summary
- Snail mucin = snail secretion filtrate, used for hydration and comfort.
- Lightweight and suitable for most skin types.
- Use after toner and before moisturiser, morning and/or night.
