If you follow Korean skincare, you have probably seen “PDRN” on serums, toners and creams. It sounds technical, but the idea is simple. Here is what you need to know before you buy.
What is PDRN?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide – a mix of small DNA fragments. In most products it comes from salmon, although some brands now use plant-based or lab-made versions. It first became popular in Korean clinics as an in-office treatment, and skincare brands then started adding it to everyday products like serums and toners.
What does it do in skincare?
In topical products, brands use PDRN to support hydration, a calmer-looking complexion and a healthy glow. It is usually paired with other well-known ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, collagen or niacinamide. Research on PDRN in creams and serums is still growing, so think of it as a helpful, gentle ingredient – not a miracle.
Who is it good for?
- Dry or dehydrated skin that feels tight and looks dull.
- Sensitive skin looking for soothing, non-harsh products.
- Anyone who wants a “glass skin” glow without strong acids.
Because most PDRN is salmon-derived, if you have a fish allergy check the ingredient list and ask your doctor first. As with any new product, do a small patch test for a couple of days.
How to add PDRN to your routine
- Cleanse as usual.
- Toner: a PDRN toner is an easy start, for example the Axis-Y Triple PDRN Gel Toner or the numbuzin No.9 NAD+ PDRN Glow Boosting Toner.
- Serum: apply a few drops on slightly damp skin, such as the Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum, the Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum or, for sensitive skin, the EQQUALBERRY Aloe PDRN Calming Serum.
- Moisturiser: seal it in, for example with the Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Capsule Cream.
- Morning only: finish with sunscreen – see our guide to choosing a sunscreen for the Egyptian sun.
PDRN can be used morning and night. You do not need three PDRN products at once – one toner or one serum is enough to start.
Can I mix PDRN with other actives?
Yes. PDRN is gentle and usually layers well with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides and vitamin C. If you also use retinol or exfoliating acids, introduce one new product at a time so you can see how your skin reacts.
Quick summary
- PDRN = DNA fragments, usually from salmon, used for hydration and glow.
- Gentle and suitable for most skin types – patch test first, and check with your doctor if you have a fish allergy.
- Start with one product (a toner or serum) and keep the rest of your routine simple.
