Blush is the fastest way to look fresh and awake. But cream, liquid and powder formulas behave very differently. Here is how to choose the right one and apply it without patches.
Powder blush
Best for: oily or combination skin, and anyone who wants long wear.
Powder blush is easy to build and blend, and it sits well on top of powder. Apply it after your foundation and setting powder with a fluffy brush. Try the NYX Buttermelt Powder Blush, the Tower 28 GetSet Matte Powder Blush or the Too Faced Love Flush Blush (travel size).
Cream and stick blush
Best for: normal to dry skin and a soft, dewy, skin-like finish.
Apply cream blush before powder, using your fingers, a damp sponge or a brush. Sticks are quick and easy to carry. Try the rhode Pocket Blush, the Makeup by Mario Soft Pop Blush Stick or the Pixi On-the-Glow Blush.
Liquid blush
Best for: all skin types, especially if you love a natural flush that lasts.
Liquid blushes are usually very pigmented – start with one tiny dot per cheek and blend quickly before it sets. Apply it before powder. Popular picks: Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, Huda Beauty Blush Filter and Pixi Liquid Glow Blush.
Where to apply it
- Natural and fresh: smile and tap blush on the apples of your cheeks, then blend back towards your ears.
- Lifted look: apply a little higher on the cheekbones and blend upwards towards the temples.
- Always blend the edges so there is no harsh line.
How to make blush last in the heat
- Layer: a cream or liquid blush first, then a light touch of powder blush in a similar shade on top.
- Use a thin layer of foundation – heavy layers move more in the heat.
- Finish with a setting spray if you have one.
Choosing a shade
- Fair to light skin: soft pinks and peaches.
- Medium and olive skin: warm rose, coral and berry tones.
- Deep skin: rich berry, brick and deep coral shades.
